BOOK CLUB

The Book Club meets once a month to discuss a book selected.

When and where: Meetings are held in the library on a Friday afternoon from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Meetings are held from September to May.

Cost: The Book Club is free of charge for our members.

To join: The Book Club has a possibility to welcome new members. If you are an avid reader and you are interested in expressing your views after reading the choice of the month, please contact the library and we will be pleased to talk to you with a view to joining our group.

COFFEE HOUSE

What better way to get a head start on a relaxing weekend with a Friday morning steaming-hot-cup-of-coffee-and-sit-and-chat-in-the-library?

When and where: Fair trade coffee and tea are served every Friday morning in the library between 9 and 11. Different subjects are discussed informally in English. This activities takes place from September to June. Discontinued during school holidays.

Cost: Coffee House is free of charge for our members. Contributions are welcomed!

To join: Just drop in, no need to reserve!

CONVERSATION GROUPS

Weekly conversation groups in English to discuss various subjects in the presence of a native English speaker. Groups have a maximum of 10 participants.

When and where: Sessions are held at the English-Language Library from October to June. Discontinued during school holidays.

Tuesdays (two separate groups) from 12:30 to 1:30 OR 1:45 to 2 :45
Wednesdays From 1:30 to 2:30
Thursdays (two separate groups) from 11:30 to 12:30 OR 5 to 6.
Fridays from 1:30 to 2:30.

Cost: participants must be a member of the library and obtain an activity card (120€ for the year)

CONVERSATION GROUP FOR UNEMPLOYED

This program is specifically for the unemployed (and/or RSA beneficiary) who would like to practice their spoken English. Activity lasts for 1 hour per week, each session lasts 3 months with a maximum of 10 per group.

When and where: Friday from 10 to 11am. Sessions are held at the English-Language Library.

Cost: 30€ for 3 months plus current library membership

DUXBURY PENPAL PROGRAM

Duxbury is a seaside town near Boston, Massachusetts, in the Northeastern United States. The English-Language Library in Angers will help you find a penpal amongst the members of Duxbury Free Library, matching people of the same age and similar interests whenever possible. This program is free to all members of the English-Language Library in Angers. Please ask for a form at the front desk. You may write by postal mail and/or by email. Please inform us when your penpal has started to respond. We encourage you to keep us informed about the progress of your penpal correspondence!

Where and when : The first meeting is at the library to introduce the volunteer to the participant.

Cost : 75€ for 6 hours (to be paid on the first meeting).

FRENCH CONVERSATION GROUP FOR ENGLISH SPEAKERS

For those who have recently arrived in the area and whose French needs a bit of brushing up, the library offers a weekly conversation group in French.

When and where: each friday from 11-12 am at the English-language Library. This activity takes place from October to June of each year, and discontinued during school holidays.

Cost: you need to be a member of the library. The activity costs 60€ for a year (90€ for a couple). .

GARDEN CLUB

The Garden Club is made of members from different countries interested in gardening wanting to visit of gardens, both private and public. Members do not have to be active gardeners but should appreciate gardens. Visits can be in French or in English. The Garden Club produces a publication entitled Garden Leaves, available at the front desk or by request.

When & where: A schedule of visits is devised at the beginning of the year and are usually organized on Thursdays once a month in February, April, May, June, July, September and October. Visits are mostly in Maine-et-Loire but sometimes are outside of the department.

Cost: The Garden Club is free of charge for members. Individuals are asked to pay their own admission fee if there is one.

PIZZA AND BOARD GAMES

When: The English-language Library organizes an evening of pizza and board games every third Tuesday of the month, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Price: 6 € (covers pizza and non-alcoholic beverages). 3€ for Native English speakers and under 16. Open to members and non-members.

READING SHAKESPEARE

This activity is a COLLECTIVE reading of a Shakespeare play organised by a native English speaker for a maximum of 10 participants. For the year of 2010-2011 the group will be reading "The Winter's Tale" by William Shakespeare corresponding to the program of the current "CAPES" and the "AGREGATION".

When and where: 1 hour each week on Friday 4-5 p.m, from October to the end of February. Discontinued during school holidays.

Cost: Reading Shakespeare is free of charge for our members.

Conversation group: one Wednesday a month from 11 a.m.-12 noon, the English-Language Library offers an English conversation group at the "Médiathèque" in Saumur. Annette Bonnell, an American, will be happy to converse in English with you. This is a free activity and open to the public.

Book table & activities: the English-language Library offers a book table and activities at the "Médiathèque" in Saumur one Wednesday a month from 2 to 6 p.m. with the following program:

From 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.: "Lending library"
For adults and children. Patrons of the "Médiathèque" of Saumur may borrow four books and one audio cassette for four weeks. They need to sign up at the English-Language Library table to get a free card. This card does not give borrowing privileges for the library in Angers. Selection of books in English: 50 adult books (fiction and non-fiction), 40 children books and ten audio cassettes are available on these Wednesdays, and may be checked out until the following month. For special requests of titles, please inform us ahead of time and we would be happy to bring them along if they are available!

From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.: "Literary Group"
The activity offers to read each month about 25 pages of the book: " French Lessons" by Alice Kaplan and talk about it. The group is for 8 people with a good English knowledge.

From 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. & 4:00 to 4:30: "Children's Hour"
The activity offers songs, nursery rhymes, stories, games and crafts for children aged 3 to 10.

From 4 to 5pm: Bookclub
The Book Club meets once a month in the AV room to discuss a book selected.

Box with books: Each month 15 adult books and 15 children books are left at the "banque des retours" (check-in counter) at the "Médiathèque" in a special box. You can borrow these books as well; just ask the librarian. You can use this box to return your books if you can't come on the day of our monthly visit.

TOEIC

The library is certified as an open center to give the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) test. To learn more about the TOEIC test, please visit the official website.

When and where: TOEIC testing takes place in the library in the evening between 7 and 9 :30 p.m. Tests are scheduled approximately once a month. Dates are announced on the What’s Happening page.

How to sign up for the test: Go to following link http://www.fr.etsglobal.org/store/ to register. You do not need to be a member of the English-Language library to take this test. An identity card with a photo is mandatory on the day of the test. The test lasts two and a half hours.
