In a nutshell...

The English-Speaking Union is an international charity which was founded in 1918. It aims to promote "global understanding through the shared use of the English language." With almost 40 branches in the United Kingdom and over 60 branches in countries around the world, the ESU promotes a variety of activities such as debating, public speaking and student exchange programmes, conferences and seminars. It offers scholarships to encourage the effective use of the English language around the globe.

The Loire Valley branch of the English Speaking Union welcomes all those for whom the English language provides an opportunity for international communication and friendship. The branch organises social events, such as barbecues, quizzes and treasure hunts, that help non-English speakers to become familiar with English language and culture. In addition, we are involved in funding:
  • Scholarships to the Globe Theatre
  • School debating and public speaking competitions.
  • Music scholarships.

The branch's events are held at monthly intervals at a variety of different locations within the area.
Guests and non-members are welcome at these events.

The Loire Valley lies at the heart of the former Angevin Empire and contains some of
its most historic sites, including Alienor's great abbey at Fontevraud
and the chateaux of Angers, Saumur and Chinon.
