Children's Hour Children's Hour takes place every Wednesday morning during the French school year. Groups of mostly French children come and spend approximately one hour learning English with songs, dances, books and crafts. Ages range from 3-9. The head of each group needs a volunteer to help out with the kids. No preparation needed, just regular presence on Wednesday mornings, a sunny disposition, and enthusiasm working with children. Commitment for the entire year if possible. Takes place in the library. Five volunteers are needed for these time slots: 9:45–10:45 a.m. with Phoebe (6 to 9-year-olds), 10–10:45 a.m. with Liz (3 to 6-year-olds), 10:45–11:30 a.m. (3 to 6-year-olds), 11–12 a.m. with Phoebe (6 to 9-year-olds), 11:30–12:15 a.m. with Liz (3 to 6-year-olds). This activity is discontinued during school holidays. Intensive English workshops Three consecutive afternoons for 12 to 14-year-olds during school vacations—one in October, one is in December and two others in the spring. Each workshop is independent. The object is to get the kids speaking in English but keep the workshop fun and informal! Special themes such as Halloween and Christmas will provide the main structure for games, songs and projects. For example, we centered last July's workshop around the theme of "Sea, Sun and Fun." Conversation groups for high school students This involves after-school conversation for teenagers aged 15 to 18. It takes place on Friday from 5 to 6 p.m. (discontinued during school holidays). What is required of the volunteer: a committed presence each Friday (if there is a conflict every now and then we can find someone to step in), capable of running a one-hour activity independently. The library has all sorts of resources, board games, ideas for ice breakers, and BOOKS of course!). Culturally-based activities are always a hit...volunteers can share what it's like to live in an English-speaking country, what sort of sports are played, what the food is like, etc.
Conversation groups for university students The perfect way to meet French students! The objective is to gather French and English speakers weekly for informal conversations - half an hour in English and half an hour in French. This activity is at the library on Saturdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. or from 3 to 4 p.m. Discontinued during school holidays. Starts at the end of October/beginning November. Any questions? We're happy to help! E-mail Marianne or Phoebe. Thank you for your interest!
